Putin: Russia to retain leadership in space

Russia has all it needs to retain its leadership position in space. By 2015, it will possess a six-seater space shuttle for replacing the veteran Soyuz capsule and for carrying manned missions to Mars. By the same year, it also hopes to have won at least 15 percent of the international space launch market.

Russia: Worst drought for more than 100 years

Russia is going through its worst drought in more than a century. In Moscow, it’s hotter than in European and African resorts, reports the Voice of Russia. The heat has caused asphalt to melt, boosted sales of air conditioners, ventilators, ice cream and beverages, and pushed world grain prices up. Ecologists are blaming the abnormally dry spell on climate change.

Russian parliament has adopted strict zero pro mille rule for drivers

The Federation Council (the Upper House of the Russian parliament) has approved a draft law which fully bans alcohol use by drivers. With that new law Russia will get one of the strictest anti alcohol rules for drivers in Europe.

Heat wave hits Russia with temperatures close to 40 degrees

In most of Russia’ central regions, temperatures will hit 38 degrees Celsius by the end of this week, meteorologists say. The drought may force the government to introduce a state of emergency in another two regions of the Russian Federation. So far 16 regions have announced a state of emergency.

Russian Custom service raises duty-free limit to 50 kg

From 1 July 2010 travelers are allowed to take 50 kilo of private goods and luggage duty-free into Russia. The value of the goods should not exceed 1500 Euro. Earlier the duty-free goods were limited to 35 kg.

Preparing visa-free travels for residents in Russian-Polish border zone

Russia and Poland are readying an agreement on reciprocal visa-free travel by the two countries’ border area residents. The agreement under preparation is similar to the one Norway and Russia are negotiating for inhabitants of Pechenga district (Murmansk region) and Sør-Varanger municipality (Finnmark county / Norway).
