Heat wave hits Russia with temperatures close to 40 degrees
[14.07.10] In most of Russia’ central regions, temperatures will hit 38 degrees Celsius by the end of this week, meteorologists say. The drought may force the government to introduce a state of emergency in another two regions of the Russian Federation. So far 16 regions have announced a state of emergency.
The heat wave has even reached the world’s coldest city of Yakutsk, with temperatures to remain about 35 degrees in the next few days. Residents of Dagestan are reported to be suffering most from sweltering heat.
Water levels in the Volga have dropped over two meters, compared to this spring. The scorching sun is destroying wheat crops.
Even in the Northern city of Murmansk – north of the Arctic circle – the day temperature has been around 25 degrees Celsius the last days.
