Everything about Murmansk |
|
 |
Here you will find a lot of information which can be useful to prepare your stay in Murmansk and of cause also during your visit – Murmansk from A to Z. We will update this information continuously and hope that you have a pleasant stay in the biggest city of the world north of the Arctic Circle. Welcome to our city!
AIDS-test: see HIV-test
Alcoholic beverages:
The price level for alcoholic beverages are lower than in most of the western countries, especially compared to prices in the Nordic countries. Nonetheless, this is not the case for alcoholic beverages which are imported from non-CIS-countries, like cognac, whisky, Italian wines etc. For those products importers have to pay high taxes and custom tariffs – so take your tax-free-quota if you come from abroad. Your Russian business partners will appreciate a bottle of some something which is typical for the country you come from.
A litre of Russian vodka of average quality has a price of around 6 Euro, for a bottle of table wine from Moldova you have to pay 2-3 Euro. Nevertheless, for some of the closest neighbours of the Murmansk-area, those prices seem to be much too low, as you can watch in some bars...
Also cigarettes, cigarillos and (Cuban!) cigars are quite cheap. For 20 cigarettes (international brands) you pay less than 1 Euro, 10 Dutch cigarillos are sold for 3-4 Euros. (see also “Tobacco”)
Bank services and currency exchange:
You will find a lot of banks and exchange offices in Murmansk. In addition to them there are ATMs all over the city, for example in the lobbies of the hotels.
We do not recommend to change money on the street. There is a high risk that some of the black market guys will cheat you – and their rate is usually not better than in the official banks. Ask rather the receptionist about the nearest bank or exchange office – or simply use an ATM.
You should be prepared for the fact that the use of credit cards is not as usual as in the USA or most of the European countries. Most of the “better places” accept ”plastic”, but anyway – you should not go out without cash.
Bars and Pubs: See also Discos and Nightclubs / Restaurants
The famous Barents Bar is located in the ground floor of Hotel Poliarnie Zori. This popular place is open until 6.00 AM – and probably the hangout no. 1 for foreigners, rich (“new”) Russians, prostitutes and also “normal” people who are willing to pay prices which are above the average. Here you will get everything you expect of the pleasure of nightlife in a Russian city. But anyway, it’s a safe place and also ok for people who just want to enjoy a drink. (Knipovicha 17)
Irish Pub. There is a ”real” Irish pub in Murmansk which serves beer from the green island (Guinness, Kilkenny) and other countries. You might think that it is a little bit beside the normal pub-route, but it`s cheap to take a taxi. (Sofi Perovskoy 25/26)
M-Club in Hotel Meridian (in the very centre of the city) is a good place for a drink but also for dining. The bar has a wide collection of beverages, the food is prepared in the restaurant next door. It is possible to dance (small dance floor) if you feel for that. Open until the early morning (Vorogovskogo 5/23)
Sedmoe Nebo (Seventh Heaven) is in the top floor (16th floor) of Hotel Arktika, the highest building in Murmansk, at the central square. This bar has got it`s name because of the fantastic view over the city and the Kola Bay – and maybe also because of some special offers… Anyway the Seventh Heaven is a popular place amongst the visiting foreigners and those living in Murmansk. The price level is a little bit lower than in Barents Bar. (Lenin Prospekt 82)
Other bars we can recommend are for example Guten Morgen (”Good Morning”), Shizgara and Red Pub (see our chapter “Restaurants”)
Bowling:
There are two big bowling centres in the city which are open the whole night
Hotel Meridian, (Vorogovskogo 5/23), in the very centre of Murmansk
Sfera, under the same roof as the disco with the same name, (Kolsky Prospekt 27)
Business support: See also local assistance
OOO Flait (“Murmansk Business Service”) is specialised on offering full service to foreign companies and business travellers under their stay in Murmansk. This includes interpreter-service, local assistance, contacts to authorities etc. You will find their office in the Hotel Poliarnie Zori (Knipovicha 17) on the first floor (off. 211 and 222). The staff of Flait speaks the following foreign languages: English, German, Finnish, Norwegian and Swedish. Tel. 289 551 og 289 559. Epost: booking@russland.ru.
Casino:
If you like to play poker, roulette, Black Jack & co, you will find a lot of opportunities in the boom-town of Murmansk, for example in Hotel Artika (first floor), Briljantnaja Ruka (“Brilliant Hand”; Kolsky Prospekt) and 69. Paralel (“69th altitude”) – see also discos. Most places are willing to take your money almost around the clock.
Cell phones:
Cell phones networks are developing in Russia with full speed. Most of the Russians have now their own mobile phone. In all cities you will find a GSM-net – of course also in Murmansk. 4 cell phone operators are providing GSM-services.
Also smaller cities in the provinces like Nikel, Zapolyarnyj, Apatity, Kirovsk, Kandalaksha, Umba etc. have coverage. On the main roads to Norway and the South (Karelia) you can also use your phone most places.
However, to use a foreign mobile phone in Russia is quite expensive – the roaming fees are high. Expect between 3 and 4 Euro per minute to call abroad or receive a call from home. Also calling within Russia with your cell phone is not cheap, even if the domestic fares for Russian subscribers are quite low.
Actually, to send a SMS is not so expensive.
See also ”Telephone” for general information about dialling the right number.
Cinemas:
There are three cinemas in the city: Atlantika (Kolsky Prospekt 131), Murmansk (Poliarnie Zori 33) og Rodina (midt i sentrum, Leningradskaya 26).
Practically all movies are dubbed and also without under titles.
The cinemas have during the last years developed into entertainment centres with bars, restaurants and so on. Of course they sell Pop corn, coke and ice cream. In the VIP-hall of Rodina there is a waitress-service.
Concerts: See theatre
Crime:
Some people ask whether it’s dangerous to travel to Murmansk. Our answer is a clear NO. Murmansk is not more dangerous than Oslo, Düsseldorf or Brussels.
Some media like to focus on crime in Russia. But: if you behave in a reasonable way and avoid dangerous situations and places (dark backyards, people with strange behaviour etc.) the risk is rather less than in European cities of the same size.
The risk is of course higher if somebody follows some good looking, but unknown girls to their flat (where some not so nice guy might wait) and of course for persons under the influence of alcohol – but that is not exactly typical for Murmansk alone.
Prostitution and crime go often hand in hand, as in most other countries as well. Avoid situations which could be risky and you will enjoy your stay completely unharmed.
Discos: See also Nightclubs
Ledakol (”Icebreaker”). Popular disco club for the richer part of the local society. The public is usually not as young as in the other discos. Show program every Friday and Saturday - mostly strip-tease (“Applause for our guest from Saint Petersburg”…) and some contest and games involving the guests. One of the most exclusive places in the city, with a decoration that is inspired by the legendary Russian icebreakers. You can also enjoy a dinner here and play billiard. Sometimes there are special live concerts with more or less famous artist (Knipovicha 17)
Pilot. One of the biggest discos in the world north of the Arctic Circle. Stylish, cool interior with a lot of metal – inspired by aviation. Three floors. On the upper floor you will find a nice and quite inexpensive restaurant (Kabanchik) with oriental fast-food and a lot of young people around. The music in the disco is tailor-made for the youngest generation, mostly techno, house, electronic music. Not exactly the place for intimate talks. (Kolsky Prospekt 158)
Planeta (“Planet”). Good old Planeta is located in the first floor of Hotel Artika. It’s a bit outdated concerning the style of the interior - not so much metal but with a certain charm. The Planeta is comparably inexpensive, a lot of ”normal” students can afford to go to this place. The music is rather varied, at least more than in Pilot or Sfera, with a lot of Russian pop. Restaurant service. (Lenin Prospekt 82)
Sfera (”Sphere”). Two large dance floors with futuristic metal-design. A typical in-place for the young and beauty ones - and those who feel for ever young. Under the same roof as the Bowling Centre with the same name. (Kolsky Prospekt 27)
69. Paralel (”69. Altitude”). Large dance floor, bar with a good view on the dance floor in the first floor. Special show programmes and concerts. Here you can also find a casino and restaurant/café in the same building. (Lyzhny Prospekt 14)
In the neighbouring city of Kola (15 minutes by taxi) they have a huge disco, called Magnit (“Magnet”). It’s an interesting combination of a disco and a (very hot) strip-tease floor. Fancy and quite young guests (many of them from Murmansk), with corresponding music. Nice, inexpensive restaurant in the first floor.
Electricity:
In Russia 220 Volt alternating current (AC) is usual – just like in most of the European countries. Sockets have also European standard.
Emergency:
In the case of an emergency you can call the following telephone numbers:
Ambulance, medical help: Telephone 03
Police: Telephone 02
You can not count on getting in contact with an English-speaking person. We advice you to ask your hotel reception for help.
Fitness:
You will find a studio in Hotel Poliarnie Zori, which is open for the guests of this hotel. In addition to that there are studios everywhere in the city, for example Glarus, Plaza etc. Ask your hotel desk.
Flowers:
You need some flowers for a loved one or for a private invitation? Everywhere in the city you will find small shops or stands which sell flowers. A large flower shop is beside the Main Railway Station (not far away from Hotel Meridian). A small flower kiosk is located at the street crossing Lenin Prospekt / Knipovicha (down the hill from Hotel Poliarnie Zori).
Flait can deliver flower gifts to your business partners or your private contacts, if you want to surprise somebody. Contact booking@russland.ru.
HIV-test:
If you apply for a multi-entry visa which is valid for more than 3 months, you need an HIV-test.
An HIV-test is also necessary if you apply for a Russian working permission (plus a lot of other tests).
It is possible to get such a test while you are staying in Murmansk – it’s much cheaper and faster than abroad. The Murmansk AIDS-centre (Tralavaya 40) offers Express-Tests for less than 3 Euro. You get the result already on next day. If you are sceptical because of hygiene - there is no reason for that.
Flait’s “Murmansk Business Service” can assist you, if you don’t speak enough Russian to go alone. Please see our information about “Local assistance” on the web.
Hotels:
There are more than 10 hotels in the city. We (Flait / Murmansk Booking / Murmansk Business Support) recommend only four of them - because they have a proper European standard, good international service and security. That does not mean that all other hotels are not acceptable for international visitors.
The hotels recommended by Flait are:
Hotel Meridian, in the heart of the city at the central square, trying hard to become the no. 1 (and they are already good)
Hotel Ogni Murmansk, outside of the city, nice hotel with a big spa and conference facilities
Hotel Poliarnie Zori, still the no. 1 amongst foreign visitor
Hotel Valgalla small, exclusive, discrete - and expensive, top-security
On our website you can find a detailed description and an updated price list of those hotels.
You can book all those hotels at original prices through FLAITS Murmansk Booking – with discounts for frequent clients.
Local assistance:
Flait’s “Murmansk Business Support” can assist you, if you don’t speak enough Russian to deal with different authorities and organisations. An English-speaking assistant will go together with you and help you through the “jungle” of bureaucracy, can organize a flat and help you with daily duties. If you have a challenge or a job you can not or will not do alone, contact Flait on tel. 289 551 (email: booking@russland.ru)
”Mafia”:
Of course the notorious ”Mafia” also exists in Murmansk – or let us say it like that: there is not only one but several criminal organisations which often compete with each other. A tourist or businessman in Murmansk will usually not have any contact with them and there is no reason to be afraid.
The ”Mafia” is mostly involved in any kind of illegal business and not notorious for robbing innocent foreigners on the street.
Museums: See Sights and Attractions
Nightclubs: See Bars and Discos
Post office:
Stamps are sold only in official post offices. The Main Post office has the address Lenin Prospekt 82a (usually long queues and a lot of waiting)
Pharmacy:
There are a lot of pharmacies in the city. Here follow some of the best known, some of them are open around the clock:
Aibolit: Kolsky Prospekt 7 (Tel. 560 320)
Severnaya: Beringa 4, open 24 hours (Tel. 490 003
Pervaya Apteka: Schmidta 45, open 24 hours (Tel. 459 669
Super Farma: Lenin Prospekt 78 (Tel. 452 365)
Prostitution:
Prostitution is more common than in some other European countries. This activity is not only created for foreigners but serves mostly the Russian “market”. It`s quite “normal” that Russian businessmen order girls for a sauna-party or when they are on a business trip.
Prostitution is officially banned in Russia. It is therefore quite often organised by criminal organisations or people with connections to this sphere. Aids and venereal diseases are spread by drugs addicted prostitutes (especially girls who are not working in the big hotels). Unprotected sex can have fatal consequences – take care!
Radiation:
Many people are afraid of radiation in the Murmansk-region. We can assure you that the level of radiation is not higher than in the northern parts of Scandinavia, which are considered to be a nature’s paradise.
You can see the actual radiation values at a big meter not far away from the Main Railway station.
There is a potential risk for radiation problems because of all the old nuclear submarines and other nuclear scrap etc. which are in the region. But Russia is taking care of this possible future problem together with the world community. So there is no need to be concerned.
Registration:
When you arrive to Russia, you have to get registered at the local authorities. Your hotel will do that for you. That is the reason why you have to leave your passport and immigration card at the hotel reception by arrival.
Restaurants, cafès, pubs: See also dinners and receptions
Here you can find a list over restaurants and other places which we can recommend to our clients. All of them are tested by us and many of them we use frequently ourselves.
This is a selection based on personal and professional experiences, there are for sure also some all right places which are not on our list (yet) – you are welcome to hint us! Murmansk is developing with high speed and we need to update our list continuously, because of all the changes.
Restaurants in the center
Alan. Specialised on Caucasian kitchen. A favourite place of many Norwegians and other foreigners and one of the first private restaurants in the city in post-soviet-time. Unfortunately the portions have become smaller and the prices have increased after a renovation. The service is not always perfect and the music can be quite noisy. In the very centre of the city (Komsomolskaya 2).
”Azerbaijan café” at the vegetable wholesale market. Mostly visited by people from the Caucasus-region. Very tasty homemade food, authentic atmosphere. A well kept secret and a real surprise if you want to invite your guests to a place which most of the locals don`t know about. The neighbourhood may look a little bit exotic, but when you are inside, you can enjoy a nice lunch or dinner. (contact Flait)
Churchill. One of the new ”in-places” in the centre of Murmansk, in the style of a traditional English pub – but with better food at reasonable prices! A good choice if you want to meet a business-partner or other people you like to talk with (the music is not too noisy for that). You will find the Churchill in a backyard of Samoylovoy Street, not far away from the Hotel Meridian. The exclusive nightclub Marrakech (which shares the kitchen with Churchill) is in the same building.
Dnem i Notchyu (”Day and Night”). If you have little time or are hungry in the middle of the night, this self-service cafeteria is probably the right place for you. Old-fashioned, a little bit Soviet-style, the quality of the food is really not too tasty. But: as the name promises - open day and night. (Lenin Prospekt 82)
Guten Morgen (”Good morning”). ”Kneipe” in German style with (not only) German drafted beer, sausages and a lot of other Germany-inspired specialities. Inexpensive, cosy and with a relaxed atmosphere – nicht nur für Deutsche geeignet :o)! Mostly nice music, some times live – no yodelling! Between Hotel Meridian and fuel station Exponeft.
Cafè Yunost (”Youth”) offers (tasty) cakes, cookies, deserts and small dishes. Open to 20.00 PM (Lenin Prospekt 86)
Krushka (”Jar”). Fast-food-restaurant with authentic rustic atmosphere in Russian Style (no Burger King!). Barbecue dishes, good beer, inexpensive. Very popular with students and other young people. Perfect for beer-drinking, they also have local beer and the Russian national-drink Kvas. There are 3 “Jars” in Murmansk: one in the centre (Profsoyuzov/Sofi Perovskoy), one in Skalnaya and one in the northern part of the city. It`s not possible to make reservations in advance.
Mama Mia. Not exactly Tuscany-style, rather a very Russian interpretation of an Italian Trattoria. But cosy, relaxed and family-friendly. Very popular amongst the first generation of foreigners in Murmansk. Large choice of pizza (but in Russian-style), kind of Italian and European dishes – good food, anyway. (Egorova)
M-Club-Restaurant. Located at the ground floor of Hotel Meridian, beside of the reception. Tasty barbeque-dishes and a lot of other food. They serve also sushi. Recommended! You will get the same food in the M-Club (bar, nightclub) next door. (Vorogovskogo 5/23)
Nulevaya Milya (”Zero Meridian”). This restaurant is located at the first floor of the passenger terminal in the harbour. Decoration in maritime style, nice view over the harbour. They have a varied menu, not only seafood. Certainly a good choice. (Portovy Proezd 25)
Poliarnie Zori. Restaurant in the first floor of Hotel Poliarnie Zori. Good choice if you are staying at this hotel and don’t want to go to a restaurant outside. Quite expensive. The level of service depends on the waiters who are working. Positive: good and varied lunch-buffet at an acceptable price. (Knipovicha 17).
Primax. Bar, cafè and restaurant with three different departments. Relaxed, inexpensive. Open to the early morning, good place for an early breakfast after a night in the city. (Egorova 6)
Rvanie Parusa (”Ripped Sail”). One of the best restaurants in the city. Trattoria with Italian-style pizza from the stone oven and different Italy-inspired dishes in the ground floor. Russian/European cuisine in the restaurant on the first floor. They make also a fantastic sushi! The noise-level of the live-music can be a little bit too high. Rvanie Parusa has its own micro-brewery.(Egorova 13a)
Shoppingsenter Rus. Good and inexpensive fast-food-restaurant which offers tasty pizza in Italian style. A little bit of Burger King or McDonalds in the heart of Murmansk. They also have alcoholic beverages. Only a 7 minutes walk from Hotel Poliarnie Zori. (Knipovicha)
Spasatelnyj Krug (”Life buoy”; also known as “Seamen’s Club”). First class restaurant in the harbour. Speciality: Seafood and barbeque (made on open fire). Friendly service. But: it can take some time before they serve the food, not everybody gets his dish together with the others at the table. For groups with more than 4-5 persons it’s a good idea to order the same food for everybody in advance. (Portovy proezd 34)
Tokyo Cafè. Cosy restaurant in Japanese style in the Drama-theatre (entrance on the left side of the theatre-building). Round about 50 seats. Sushi, Japanese, Chinese and European/Russian cuisine. Homemade beer from the Rvanye Parusa micro-brewery. Comparably low prices, nice environment. (Lenin Prospekt 49)
Valgalla. Small restaurant in the exclusive hotel with the same name. Italian and European cuisine. High price level. Recommended if you want to be for yourself and prefer a high level of security. (Rogozerskaya 14)
Outside of the centre
Krechet. Outside of the city, on the road to Hotel Ogni Murmanska, you will find the open air restaurant Krechet (with a few seats inside). Here they make a perfect Russian “Shashlik” (barbeque). It`s rally great to sit outside in nice weather – not only in summer time.(At the road Murmansk – St. Petersburg)
Ogni Murmanska (”Flame of Murmansk”). Hotel with a very good restaurant, which gives really value for money. Tasty and varied food, excellent for large groups who want to have their food served at the same time. (At the Murmank-Saint Petersburg road, 8th kilometre)
Red Pub. Bar and pub in Soviet-nostalgic style. Decoration with a lot of memorabilia from the red days. Low prices, relaxed atmosphere, a really special place! (Molodezhny Proezd 12)
Shizgara. Café and bar inspired by Mexico and Texas - and a popular Soviet movie with the same name. Here you can enjoy Russian Burritos, Enchiladas etc. They make a good Margarita and of course they offer different sorts of Tequila. The Shizgara is located to the basement of the Cinema Atlantika in the 1st of May – district. (Kolsky Prospekt 131)
Tsarskaya Okhota (”The Tsars Hunt”). This was earlier one of the best restaurants in Murmansk, but nowadays it has changed the style and became more popular (that means achievable for normal people). Rustic Russian style, Russian food. Inexpensive. (Kolsky Prospekt 86)
Saunas
As far as we know, there are more than a hundred saunas in the city. Here are some of the best:
Glarus. A lot of saunas in different sizes. Large Russian Banya in a seperate building. Restaurant, billiard, medical massage. (Komsomolskaya 15)
Pharaoh. Large sauna with 160 square meters which can accommodate up to 12 persons. Swimming pool (5 x 10 meter) with very clean water (regular control). Turkish sauna. Restaurant service. Open 24 hours, but reservation in advance needed. (Kominterna 7)

Sightseeing i Murmansk
See our different offers here on this website
Snuff, Snus:
You can buy Swedish Snuff (Snus) for example in Barents Bar (Hotel Poliarnie Zori), but the price is almost as high as in Norway. They sell also Snus in the tobacco shop Andromeda (Poliarnie Zori Street) at reasonable prices.
Mostly sold are General and Ettan, both as portion and loose Snus. But they also sell more fancy variants made in Sweden
Taxi
Murmansk has a lot of different taxi companies. In addition to that there are hundreds of private (“pirate”) taxis. Unofficial taxis charge very often a higher price for foreigners. The technical condition of the cars is not always acceptable.
Telephone numbers of official taxi companies are for example 007, 252525 or 262626.
At most of the hotels taxis are waiting for clients, but their price level is often quite high (and not all taxi drivers are as reliable as those waiting in the lobby of Hotel Poliarnie Zori).
If you take a taxi at the airport, they charge sometimes more than the triple price of official taxis (which are not waiting there) – it’s better and cheaper to order a transfer in advance (Flait: 289 551 or booking@russland.ru).
We do not recommend to stop an unofficial taxi in the middle of the night, especially when you are alone.
Theatres and concerts
Murmansk has three theatres: The Drama-Theatre in the centre (Lenin Prospekt 49), The Theatre of the Northern Fleet (in the 1st of May-district, Kolsky Prospekt 186) and the Puppet-Theatre (Teater Kukol, in the centre, Sofi Perovskoy 27).
The city has also a Music-hall with its own philharmonic orchestra and a varied music programme, where also guests from other parts of Russia or abroad perform.(Sofi Perovskoy 3)
Shows are usually in Russian language, but anyway, to visit a theatre is an interesting meeting with the locals.
Telephone (see also cell phones)
If you want to call Russia, you have to dial 007 (or +7 from your cell phone).
The area code for Murmansk city is 8152 – that means if you want to call from abroad you have to dial 007 8152 (or +7 8152) as a prefix for a Murmansk-number, which usually has 6 digits.
Cell phone numbers consist of the 3-digit-code for the provider (f ex 911 for MTS or 921 for Megaphone) and a personal 7-digit number. If you want to call the publisher on his mobile phone, you call +7 911 30000 99.
If you call from Russia to a Russian number, you have to dial an 8 first to get a line (local calls are without this 8).
If you want to call from Russia to a number abroad, you have to dial 810 for the international line. Then follows the international country code (like 49 for Germany, 46 for Sweden, 31 for the Holland etc.).
Time
Murmansk is located in the so called Moscow Time zone. That means British time plus 3 hours, German or Norwegian time plus 2 hours and Finnish time plus 1 hour.
With other words: When it’s 1.00 PM in London, it’s 2.00 PM in Berlin, 3.00 PM in Helsinki and 4.00 PM in Murmansk.
Russia follows the international rules for summer- and wintertime.
Tobacco:
A very good tobacco shop is Andromeda in Poliarnie Zori Street (not far away from the hotel with the same name). There you can buy Dutch cigarillos and Cuban cigars at comparably low prices. They also sell cigarettes – and wine and alcoholic beverages from all over the world.
Cuban cigars you can also buy in the Exponeft fuel station near the Main Railway Station.
Travel agencies:
Our company OOO Flait is specialised on travel agency services for foreign clients. We work closely together with our Norwegian partner VIA Travel in Kirkenes. Our offices are in Hotel Poliarnie Zori (Knipovicha 17), on the first floor (off. 211 and 222). The Flait-staff speaks English, German, Finnish, Swedish and Norwegian. Tel. 289 551and 289 559. Email: booking@russland.ru.
Working permission
You need a working permission if you have a regular job in Murmansk, even if you work for a foreign company. Be prepared that this will be a comparably complicated procedure.
Amongst other documents you need some medical tests concerning: AIDS/HIV, TB, drug addiction, venereal diseases and your psyche. The tests are taken on different places all over the city.
In addition to that you have to fill out a lot of forms and you need many (round) stamps ….
Flait’s “Murmansk Business Service” can assist you, if you don’t speak enough Russian to go alone. Please see our information about “Local assistance” on the web.
