Saipem wants to cooperate with Sevmash to build offshore production installations for Shtokman

The Italian company Saipem wants build offshore production installations for the Shtokman field in the Barents Sea in cooperation with the engineering giant Sevmash in Severodvinsk (near Arkhangelsk). This said the press office of the county government of Arkhangelsk, according to the news agency RIA Novosti.


Experts from Saipem had a meeting with representatives of county government in Arkhangelsk on Tuesday. They discussed the perspectives for a possible collaboration.



The giant shipbuilding company Sevmash, headed by Nikolai Kalistratov, has over 25,000 employees in Severodvinsk. The yard expects to participate in the project if Saipem gets the contract from Shtokman Development AG. Part of the project would be the construction of a 300-meter production vessels to be used on the Shtokman-field in the Barents Sea.

For foreign companies that wants to participate in the Shtokman project, it is important to include Russian partners and subcontractors to meet the demand for Russian content.

SDAG has previously stated that two international consortia have submitted their technical solutions for a floating production platform. The first consists of Norwegian Aker Solutions, French Technip and Dutch SBM Offshore, the second of Italian Saipem, Korean Samsung and Softec.

Saipem is a part of the Italian energy group Eni and delivers technical solutions for oil and gas production. The group participates in the development of oil and gas fields on Sakhalin in Russia's Far East and is also involved in the gas pipeline projects Nord Stream and Blue Stream.



Facts about Shtokman

The Shtokman field is located in the central part of the shelf of the Russian sector of the Barents Sea, app. 550-600 kilometers northeast of Murmansk, about 320 – 350 meters below sea level. C1+Ñ2 reserves amount to 3.8 trillion cubic meters of gas and about 37 million tons of gas condensate. The Shtokman gas and condensate field was discovered in 1988. The fishing village of Teriberka (130 kilometer northeast of Murmansk) will be the main hub for the Shtokman activities.

The Shtokman gas condensate field will become a source of Russian natural gas for pipeline deliveries to the European markets (via Nord Stream pipeline) and LNG deliveries to the Atlantic market.

Gazprom Dobycha Shelf (former Sevmorneftegaz) holds the license to the field. The first phase involves producing 23.7 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. Pipeline gas supplies should begin in 2013 and liquefied gas supplies in 2014.

A joint venture, Shtokman Development (Gazprom - 51%, Total - 25%, StatoilHydro - 24%), has been set up to carry out the first phase of the development.

The final investment decision for the pipe gas part of the first phase will be done in March 2011, for the LNG in December 2011.
